ROME

A list of a few of my (Aurora) favorites places to eat, drink, and see in and around Rome… I’d buy a book on the churches of Rome and just get lost in their history. My favorite time to wander and see Fontana di Trevi, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, Coliseum is a late night walk, streets are empty…

GELATO

Neve Di Latte - A new contender to Ben’s favorite Gelato in Rome. A much more nuanced with strong natural flavors than Giolitti best summed by our friend Kim as, “More flavor, less sugary than Giolitti.” There are 4-5 locations in Rome so google the name on the maps and see which is closest to you. Below is the address for the location we last went to.

MUSEUMS / SIGHTS

Most museum are closed Mondays. I suggest checking times ahead or buying tickets for everything well in advance.
Listed are a few of my favorites. I’d buy a book on the churches of Rome and just get lost in their history. My favorite time to see / wander the sights, Fontana di Trevi, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, Coliseum is a late night walk, streets are empty....

Janiculum

One of the best locations for a view of Rome near Trastevere. Here you will find one of my favorites by Bramante, Il Tempietto (1502) of the Church of San Pietro in Montorio, This small shrine is the supposed site of St Peter's crucifixion. Further up the hill you will find the late 17th century Baroque Fontana dell'Acqua Paola. Definitely worth the trip but requires a lot of walking up a big hill, but can be reached by car. You might recognize the locations from the beginning of the 2013 movie, La Grande Bellezza / The Great Beauty co-written and directed by Paolo Sorrentino.
Go up to the top, have some ice cream with a view, while watching a puppet show of Punch and Judy, my favorite as a child. There is a restaurant called Arco Antico, Sit outside and call in advance

The twin churches Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria di Montesanto. This late 15th Century Basilica is one of my favorites - touched by Raphael, Bernini, Bramante, Caravaggio and his rival Carracci

Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere. You can stroll over after dinner at Taverna Trilussa. It is also one of the oldest churches of Rome and my favorite. Dates back to the 340's. However I seem to get lost in this area, so it always a great surprise to turn a corner and rediscover it again.

Villa Medici (Spanish steps area)
Go see where the famous Medici Family lived and wander around the gardens if open to public. Might be an awesome exhibition there. I went to a music festival there years ago in the garden over looking Rome. Absolutely amazing! Check to see if events or festivals are going on.
